Almodóvar Returns to the Cannes Film Festival with 'The Skin That I Inhabit'
Almodóvar regresa al Festival de Cannes con 'La piel que habito'
Following his success on the Croisette with previous works such as ‘Volver’ and ‘All About My Mother’, Pedro Almodóvar is returning to the Cannes Film Festival with his film The Skin That I Inhabit. The filmmaker from La Mancha will have some tough competition for the Palme d’Or at this 64th edition of the French festival to be held from May 11th through the 22nd. This year the Official Selection will open with a Spanish production that is participating out of contest: Woody Allen’s ‘Midnight in Paris’.
Pedro Almodóvar vuelve al Festival de Cannes con su filme La piel que habito, tras haber triunfado en La Croissette con anteriores trabajos como Volver o Todo sobre mi madre. El cineasta manchego tendrá una dura competencia por la Palma de Oro de la 64 edición del certamen galo que se celebra del 11 al 22 de mayo. Además, la sección oficial de este año se inaugura con la producción española 'Medianoche en París', dirigida por el director norteamericano Woody Allen, que participa fuera de concurso.
Spanish presence at Cannes also includes ‘Mr. Kaplan’. Álvaro Brechner’s latest project was chosen as part of the Cinéfondation Selection. Two other titles with participation from Spanish companies are to be screened in two of the event’s most prestigious parallel sections: ‘Las Acacias’, by Pablo Giorgell, an Argentine and Spanish co-production, will be screened during la Semaine de la Critique; and ‘Porfirio’, by Alejandro Landes, a coproduction between Colombia, Spain and Uruguay, will premiere during the Director’s Fortnight.
After learning that the organization had accepted his next film in the Official Selection’s competition, Pedro Almodóvar declared: 'I’m going to the Cannes Film Festival in hopes of doing well at the most important art house film event in the world, but I’m not worried about getting an award. I’m more interested in seeing the reactions from the audience, the press and distribution companies that will handle the film all over the world'.
The director of ‘Law of Desire’ also added, 'I’m very happy with how ‘The Skin That I Inhabit’ has come out, and I’m extremely curious to see what the reaction will be at this very diverse festival. That is why I have accepted the invitation to participate in the Official Competition. Plus, Cannes always provides a good stimulus to go on a diet'.
La presencia española en Cannes se completa con Mr. Kaplan, el nuevo proyecto de Álvaro Brechner, seleccionado para la sección Cinefon dation, y dos obras con participación española ubicas en la programación de dos de las secciones paralelas de más prestigio: la coproducción de Argentina y España, Las Acacias, de Pablo Giorgell, en la Semana de la Crítica, y la coproducción de Colombia, España y Uruguay, Porfirio, de Alejandro Landes, en la Quincena de los Realizadores.
Tras conocer la decisión de la organización de incluir su próxima película en la Sección Oficial a concurso Pedro Almodóvar declaró: 'voy al Festival de Cannes con la ambición de hacer un buen papel en la cita mundial más importante de cine de autor, pero no pienso en premios. Me interesan sobre todo la reacción del público, la prensa y los distribuidores que se ocuparán de la película en el mundo'.
El director de 'La ley del deseo' comentó además 'estoy muy contento con el resultado de La piel que habito y tengo una enorme curiosidad por ver cuál es la reacción en el variado seno del Festival. Por eso he aceptado la invitación de formar parte de la Competición Oficial. Además, Cannes siempre supone un estímulo para ponerse a dieta'.
